ABSU Submits Memorandum to Education Minister: Demands Bodo Language in Central Institutions
By eNews Site/Prasenjit| Date: February 28, 2026
NEW DELHI/KOKRAJHAR — The All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) has formally urged the Union Government to implement the Bodo language in all centrally run educational institutions and examinations across Bodoland and Assam.
In a formal memorandum dated February 10, 2026, addressed to Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, Hon'ble Education Minister of India, the apex student body highlighted the constitutional rights and historical significance of the Bodo language to press for its inclusion. The letter, spearheaded by ABSU President Dipen Boro and General Secretary Khanindra Basumatary, emphasizes the language's status under the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution.
Key Demands and Justifications
The primary subject of the memorandum is a strong appeal for the "Implementation of Bodo language in all centrally run educational institutions and exams in Bodoland and Assam."To support their demand, the ABSU outlined several salient features and historical milestones of the Bodo language in their submission:
* Historical Roots: The Bodo language is recognized as the oldest language of Assam and Northeast India belonging to the Sino-Tibetan Language family group.
* Constitutional Recognition: It was officially recognized and included in the 8th Schedule of the Indian Constitution following the historic BTC Accord of 2003.* Official Status: Bodo serves as the associate official language of Assam. This was cemented by the BTR Accord of 2020 and subsequently amended in the Assam Official Language Act of 1960.* Educational Reach: Highlighting its practical importance, ABSU noted that Bodo is the 2nd largest medium of instruction in Assam, following Assamese. It is actively studied up to Class XII and is available as a MIL/Major/Elective subject in Higher Secondary, Degree, and Post Graduate courses across prominent institutions like Gauhati University, Bodoland University, and Dibrugarh University.
Next Steps at the Ministry
A copy of the document reveals official notations and signatures from the Ministry's end, with directives to "coordinate," indicating that the Education Ministry has received the memorandum and is likely reviewing the demands.
The implementation of the Bodo language in central institutions (such as Kendriya Vidyalayas, Navodaya Vidyalayas, and central university entrance exams) would mark a significant step toward linguistic parity and educational accessibility for Bodo-speaking students in the region.
