📰 Flood Havoc in Pimpri-Chinchwad and Pune: Thousands Evacuated Amid Torrential Rains

Pune, August 21, 2025 — Continuous heavy rainfall o
ver the past few days has triggered a flood-like situation across Pune and its twin city Pimpri-Chinchwad, forcing civic authorities to evacuate thousands of residents from low-lying and riverbank areas.

🌧️ Rainfall and Dam Discharges Intensify Crisis
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Pune, Satara, and surrounding regions as rainfall in the catchment areas of Khadakwasla, Mulshi, and Pavana dams surged. Authorities responded by releasing over 50,000 cusecs of water collectively from the dams, causing rivers like the Mutha, Mula, Pavana, and Indrayani to swell dangerously.

🏠 Mass Evacuations and Relief Measures
The Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) relocated more than 2,000 residents from flood-prone zones including Bhatanagar, Kiwale, Kalewadi, Pimple Nilakh, Bopkhel, and Sanjay Gandhi Nagar. Relief centers were set up in municipal schools and community halls, equipped with food, clean water, electricity, and medical aid.

In Pune city, over 200 people were evacuated from areas like Ekta Nagar, Yerwada, and Warje after water from the Khadakwasla dam inundated homes and streets. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) deployed emergency teams to assist with drainage and shelter operations.

🚨 Emergency Response in Full Swing
Disaster management cells have been activated across all regional offices. Fire brigades, ambulances, boats, and PMPML buses are being used for swift evacuations. Civic officials are working in three shifts to monitor dam discharges, rainfall data, and coordinate with the police and IMD for real-time updates.

🛑 Public Advisory
Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert, cooperate with evacuation efforts, and avoid venturing near riverbanks. Citizens can contact PCMC’s 24x7 control room at 020-67331111 / 020-28331111 or the Fire Department helpline at +91 7030908991 in case of emergencies.

🌊 Outlook
With rainfall continuing in the ghat regions and dam reservoirs nearing capacity, officials warn that further discharges may be necessary. The situation remains tense, but under control, thanks to coordinated efforts between civic bodies, emergency services, and local volunteers.
