🇮🇳 Operation Sindoor: Army Chief Reveals How India Responded to Pahalgam Attack with Precision and Resolve
Chennai, August 10, 2025 — In a powerful address at IIT Madras, Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi shared gripping details of Operation Sindoor, India’s decisive military response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 civilian lives. The operation, launched on May 7, marked a strategic shift in India’s counter-terror doctrine, blending precision strikes with political clarity and tri-service coordination.
🧠 Political Clarity and Military Autonomy
General Dwivedi emphasized the importance of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s directive on April 23, which gave the Army, Navy, and Air Force full autonomy to decide their course of action.
“This was the first time RM said, ‘Enough is enough.’ That kind of confidence and clarity raised morale and empowered commanders to act decisively,” Dwivedi said.
♟️ A Game of Chess in the Grey Zone
Dwivedi likened the four-day conflict to a game of chess, where India made calculated moves in the grey zone — operations just short of conventional warfare.
“We didn’t know the enemy’s next move. Somewhere we gave them checkmate, somewhere we went in for the kill at the risk of losing our own,” he explained.

🛰️ Intelligence and Technology
The operation showcased India’s growing prowess in electronic warfare, satellite surveillance, and indigenous defence systems. The Agnishodh Research Cell, inaugurated at IIT Madras, will further integrate academic innovation into military strategy.
🇮🇳 National Impact
Prime Minister Narendra Modi named the operation “Sindoor,” symbolizing unity and sacrifice. Dwivedi noted how the name resonated with citizens, turning grief into resolve.
“Every time a woman applies sindoor, she will remember the soldier,” he said.
